A hinterland waiting to be discovered
The Romagna hinterland is a magical combination of romantic villages, breathtaking landscapes and evocative fortresses, palaces and castles. Traces of history are carved into every alley, street and square, telling stories of different eras, battles and conquests.
Entertainment, Shopping and Culture
The oldest and smallest sovereign state in the world boasts centuries of history and unique monuments to discover. The Three Towers – Guaita, Cesta and Montale – are the symbol of San Marino and a must-see during your visit. But that’s not all: the area is home to nine splendid castles and unique museums, all waiting to be explored.
And after a stroll through history and panoramic views, this small republic is also the ideal destination for shopping, with a variety of shops and affordable prices.
A village rich in love and history
So picturesque that it seems immersed in a distant world full of magic, it is the perfect place to taste cuisine that embodies the charm of two regions, Marche and Romagna. It should not be forgotten that the city walls still jealously guard the story of the tormented love between Paolo and Francesca, praised by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy. Among the unmissable events of the summer in Gradara is the Assault of the Castle.
A view overlooking the inland area
It stands on an enormous rock that is impassable all around, so much so that the only way to reach it is via a single road carved into the rock. The town was home to Dante and St Francis of Assisi, but it is best known for that mysterious and fascinating character, the ‘alchemist’ Count Cagliostro, who was imprisoned in the Fortress and died there in 1795. Among our recommendations, a visit to the Fortress, the Parish Church and the Cathedral is a must. The view from San Leo is one of the most beautiful in the region, so this delightful village is well worth a visit.
Fascinating and mysterious
The distinctive feature of this town is that it is historically and artistically divided into two parts: one dating back to the 18th century, the other medieval, visible in the upper part that rises above Monte Giove, which is also home to over 100 tufa caves, one of the most fascinating mysteries in the whole of Romagna. Worth visiting are the elegant churches, the tiny alleys of the old town, the Malatesta Fortress, the Ethnographic Museum of the Customs and Traditions of the People of Romagna, the Collegiate Church and the Clock Tower.
Azzurrina and her legend
When talking about Montebello, one inevitably mentions its castle and the story of Azzurrina, an albino girl who died prematurely. Her story has become a particular folk legend that has been handed down for over three centuries. Legend has it that the ghost of the girl is trapped in the castle and returns every five years on the summer solstice, accompanied by eerie paranormal phenomena.
